Former First Assistant Counsel to the New York Governor, Niall O’Hegarty, Joins Greenberg Traurig

The international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP welcomes Niall O’Hegarty to its Albany and New York City offices as of counsel in the Litigation and Government Law and Policy practices. O’Hegarty joins from the New York Governor’s office, where he was the Acting First Assistant Counsel to the Governor.

“Niall’s extensive experience in New York State government coupled with his previous positions in both private practice and public service will be critical to serving the needs of our clients,” said Harold Iselin, managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Albany office and chair of the firm’s Government Law and Policy Practice.

O’Hegarty represents regulated entities in the insurance and financial services industry. He handles internal investigations, compliances matters, and civil and commercial litigation matters.

Prior to joining the firm, O’Hegarty served as the Acting First Assistant Counsel to the New York Governor, where he oversaw the development and negotiation of major legislation, including budget and programmatic legislation. During this time, he advised the Governor on legal issues relating to executive actions, policy initiatives, and the operations of nearly 100 State agencies, boards, and public authorities. In addition, he advised the governor on legal issues relating to the State’s financial services and insurance sectors, State disaster response operations, and significant litigation.

Prior to the Governor’s office, O’Hegarty worked in private practice at Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason & Anello, PC as well as Sullivan & Cromwell, LLP as an associate.

O’Hegarty holds an LL.B. from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School and a B.A. from the University of Toronto.
