The question of whether or not to sew the platysma bands together, also referred to as a platysma corsetplasty, should be made based on the degree of platysma muscle laxity

Many surgeons in the field of cosmetic surgery state that the platysma corset plasty, a neck lift procedure that leaves a small scar under the chin, is not necessary. Their primary concern is for the visibility of the scar and whether or not that can be avoided. Dr. Anthony J. Geroulis, board-certified cosmetic surgeon and founder of North Shore Center for Facial Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, tailors his facelift and neck lift procedures to each individual patient depending upon the degree to which the aging process has taken its toll on their face and neck regions. Dr. Geroulis believes that while the platysma corset plasty, sometimes referred to as a corset neck lift, isn’t always necessary, there are times when it is the best course of action.

Dr. Geroulis explains: “The question of whether or not to sew the platysma bands together, also referred to as a platysma corset plasty, should be made based on the degree of platysma muscle laxity. What I do to evaluate this is first pull the platysma up from each side and then evaluate the looseness of the platysma bands in the middle of the neck.” Dr. Geroulis recommends that a surgeon proceed with the corset neck lift if pulling the platysma up on each side does not correct the excess loose skin in the middle of the neck. In that case, a platysma corset plasty, would be the recommended procedure.

Dr. Geroulis believes very strongly that each procedure must be fine tuned for that particular patient, which is something that he says cannot easily be taught: “I must caution everyone, however, that the degree of skin pulling is extremely important and for this, there is no formula. It is truly based on the surgeon's experience and their artistic understanding of what a natural result should be.” For more information about North Shore Center for Facial Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery, please call (866) 875-3937 or visit http://www.geroulis.com.
