They were all very kind, and the server comped the group a brownie martini for both birthday celebrants; Matlin was celebrating a joint birthday with her young costar Austin P. Since half of the cast are deaf actors, her friends sang and signed happy birthday. The group was extremely easygoing; bowling while sipping on Margaritas and craft beers. The server recalled Marlee being super nice, and flashing her signature smile the whole time.

She tweeted an image of her and fellow cast member Mr. McKenzie holding up bowling balls with caption - @MarleeMatlin: I have a half hour left to wish my @SpringBway “son” aka Melchior Gabor aka @austinthoughts a Happy Birthday - too!!

Ms. Matlin will play Frau Gabor — mother to the young protagonist, Melchior — as well as Frau Schmidt. In this production, Melchior’s best friend, Moritz, is also deaf, and Frau Gabor “serves as a role model and source of compassion and inspiration” to him, according to Ms. Matlin, as told to the NY Times.
