Seven red and green appliqué quilts showcase cross-cultural influences

"Princess Feather" Circa 1850-1870; Maker unknown

We love having such an extraordinary collection of appliqué quilts in our gallery, and not knowing who the makers of the quilts are makes them all the more interesting.

AccuQuilt welcomes a new exhibit, Red and Green: An American Quilt Icon, a powerful display of seven historical quilts featuring amazing English appliqué, vibrant Germanic folk art, and a plethora of American manufactured cotton fabrics. The exhibit will run through October 28.

These unique quilts were first discovered during the mid to late 1800s in the Mid-Atlantic states when millions of Europeans emigrated to the U.S. and migrated west. The few necessities they took with them were bundled inside their prized red and green appliqué quilts.

Red and green floral designs were popular in nineteenth-century American decorative arts, so this became the go-to color scheme for quilts. Further, it was only when fabrics were being manufactured in America did it become more affordable to the middle class. With colorful cotton fabrics readily available, middle class women started making appliqué quilts, an intricate style of quilting that quickly became common. Their impressive designs are now on display in many museums across the nation.

The Red & Green Exhibit is a small sampling of the nearly 200 red and green appliqué quilt collection at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE. The IQSCM is home to the largest publicly held quilt collection in the world.

"We love having such an extraordinary collection of appliqué quilts in our gallery, and not knowing who the makers of the quilts are makes them all the more interesting," said AccuQuilt CEO Steve Nabity.

You can view the Red & Green Exhibit at the AccuQuilt Gallery Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. by appointment.
