LBM Journal, the leading magazine for the lumber/building material distribution channel, has announced that Hayward Lumber of Monterey, Calif., Neb., has received the Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2015 in the category of “Sales of Over $50 Million.” The prestigious award honors Hayward Lumber as a company that epitomizes the entrepreneurial spirit by excelling at satisfying customers, embracing company improvements and successfully seeking out new business opportunities.

As reported in the January 2015 issue of LBM Journal, Hayward Lumber is a long-time advocate for green building, a leader in healthy home construction. The company’s healthy home path began in 1998 and is based on four key principles: continuous fresh air, proper sealing and insulating, minimized toxic materials and cleanable surfaces.

“Our mission today is “To improve health in America by changing the way we build,” says Bill Hayward, CEO, president and chief sustainability officer for Hayward Lumber. “My family got sick in a new home, and I don’t want that to happen to others. I see the rapid rise in habitability claims, and I know this is a problem worth solving.”

Today, with seven locations throughout California, Hayward Lumber offers its own EnviroSmart program, promoting green building products that comply with the company’s sustainable standards. “In my opinion, a Healthy Home is many steps beyond green building,” Hayward adds. “Green building meant the next generation of building materials that perform better, last longer, use less energy and are good for the planet. We learned to sell the right green building materials as high-performance building materials because builders actually want high-performance in their buildings.”

According to Rick Schumacher, editor and publisher of LBM Journal, the forward-thinking attitude of Hayward Lumber helps pave the way for continued company expansion. "A true visionary, Bill Hayward embraced the concept and practice of green building long before it was accepted as mainstream," says Schumacher. "Given the company’s track record of solid growth, and Bill’s propensity to lean forward, we’re proud to recognize Hayward Lumber as an Entrepreneur of the Year."

Started in 2005, the annual LBM Journal Entrepreneur of the Year awards program recognizes companies of different sizes who epitomize the entrepreneurial spirit. The fierce commitment of Hayward Lumber to excel and grow year-after-year made them a winner in this year's competition.
