SPIE Optifab, the largest optical fabrication event in North America, will return to Rochester, New York, in October with a sold-out exhibition spotlighting classical and advanced optical manufacturing technologies.
Sponsored by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and cosponsored by APOMA, the American Precision Optics Manufacturers Association, the event will run 12-15 October in the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
Optifab serves as a vital industry forum to learn about the new tools, processes, materials, and equipment necessary to keep current and stay competitive.
Approximately 100 technical talks will cover topics such as grinding and polishing, optical fabrication of freeform surfaces, metrology, optical materials, cleaning and coating, optical design, optical engineering, meter-class optics, and molded optics.
A complementary suite of half- and full-day courses taught by instructors who are experts in their fields offers training for working professionals seeking to add skills and maintain a competitive edge. Courses include new topics in optical manufacturing standards, freeform optics, and optics fundamentals.
Returning attendees including conference chairs Julie Bentley, University of Rochester, and Sebastian Stoebenau, OptoTech Optikmaschinen GmbH, are anticipating a productive week.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren will open the exhibition, which runs Tuesday through Thursday during the week.
Among the 180 exhibiting companies are industry suppliers such as Mahr Federal, Trioptics, Universal Photonics, and Zygo Corporation, showing displays and demonstrations of optical and optomechanical components, materials, systems and devices, laser system components, optical test and metrology systems, thin-film coatings and more.
Michael Naselaris of Sydor Optics, who chairs the exhibition along with Justin Mahanna and Richard Nastasi of Universal Photonics, Inc., credits the event with helping enable success for his company.
“For us, Optifab was a success going back to the very first one in 2003, when we learned of a new product that revolutionized our grinding process,” Naselaris said. “If we hadn’t been there, we would never have learned about this technology.”
That dynamic has continued, he said. “Every year we learn about new materials, new process consumables, and new equipment that keeps us up to date and, more importantly, keeps us competitive. To miss Optifab is just like saying, ‘I’m good with what I know now, I don’t need to learn or improve anymore’.”
Large equipment manufacturers will have a major presence on the exhibit floor again this year, with companies including OptoTech Optical Machinery, Schneider Optical Machines, QED Technologies, OptiPro Systems and Satisloh North America providing a close-up look at their latest products.
