Avenues to Recovery is offering depression screenings in honor of this occasion.
National Depression Screening Day is October 8, 2015. In recognition of this day, the Avenues to Recovery program is providing free depression screenings for all on October 8th. From 1:00 pm-4:00 pm, depression screenings will be available for the community at the Akron Public Library (located at 60 S. High St.) in Room 2 AB.
“Mental health problems are common and occur at any age, even in older adults,” said Laura Kidd, Director of Avenues to Recovery. In fact, according to the Center for Disease Control, “about 80% of older adults have at least one chronic health condition, and 50% have two or more.” Older adults are at a greater risk of developing depression because of the prevalence of illnesses and because when physical function becomes limited, this often triggers feelings of depression.
Mature Services provides high-quality programs to empower the economic, social, physical, and mental well-being of adults as they age. Programs include homecare, integrated mental health counseling and addiction prevention and treatment, job training, home delivered and congregate meals, volunteer opportunities and an emergency food pantry.
