The state of Maryland is experiencing an epidemic of addiction. We need to stand together to make a bigger impact.
(PRWEB) October 05, 2015
As most are aware, the state of Maryland (in addition to the entire country) is in the middle of an epidemic that is killing people in record numbers. A report from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene determined that in 2014, there were 1,039 drug or alcohol-related intoxication deaths- a 60% increase from 2010. Further, 85.7% of these 1,039 deaths were opioid-related (a 76% increase from 2010).
These numbers are staggering, and things only seem to be getting worse. While many treatment centers, grassroots organizations, and nonprofits are making individual efforts, it is critical that we start thinking on a larger scale. Serenity Acres Treatment Center is hosting a collaborative forum to unite efforts going on in the state that are working to combat substance abuse. These efforts include:
inpatient drug and alcohol treatment centers
legal and medical professionals
Serenity Acres is holding a planning meeting and informational session at their facility just outside of Annapolis, to discuss what needs must be met and how Maryland citizens, politicians, and businesses can work together to combat this deadly epidemic by supporting drug addiction treatment, prevention, and awareness.
The meeting will be held on Monday, October 19th, from 7-9 PM at Serenity Acres Treatment Center (2015 Martins Grant Court, Crownsville MD 21032).
Please RSVP to attend the event.
The magnitude of the drug epidemic in this state calls for large-scale prevention and educational measures, and by working together, Maryland can provide more drug addiction treatment, prevention, and awareness.
