San Diego-Based Dog Treat Company Uses Crickets for Environmental and Canine Health Reasons

We wanted to find a solution to address water scarcity, climate change, and find a way to feed the growing population ... much of the western world isn’t ready to eat insects. But they did tell us they would love to feed crickets to their dogs.

EntoBento has launched their environmentally friendly, cricket powder-based dog treats on Kickstarter, earning more than $10,000 by day five of their campaign. (Source: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/entobento/entobento-human-grade-dog-treats-made-from-cricket)

The one-year-old San Diego-based company has turned to Kickstarter to fulfill the minimum order quantity required by their manufacturer, also located in San Diego. Rather than use beef, chicken, or fish as the main protein in their treats, EntoBento has chosen to use cricket powder.

EntoBento’s cricket powder is much more sustainable than beef, a common meat in dog treats:

The company, lead by a team of six co-founders, started as part of a Startup Weekend MEGA competition back in November of 2014. Inspired by a UN Report on edible insects, the EntoBento team, strangers before the Startup Weekend, has stayed together for one year to make that initial vision a reality.

“We wanted to encourage people to incorporate insects into their diet as a solution to address water scarcity, climate change, and find a way to feed the growing population. After talking with people, we realized that much of the western world isn’t ready to eat insects. But they did tell us they would love to feed crickets to their dogs,” explained Chris Glascoe, co-founder of EntoBento. “That was a light bulb moment. With the help of human-grade cricket farming/processing facilities, veterinarians, canine experts, dog owners, and hundreds of dogs themselves, we created our first treat recipe that not only supports our vision of a sustainable future, but allows dogs with sensitivities to beef, chicken, fish and wheat to enjoy a high protein treat. Plus, dogs go crazy for it.”
