The Miami office of international law firm Greenberg Traurig, P.A. recently hosted a free CLE Training for lawyers on Habeas Petitions: Challenging Prolonged & Indefinite Immigration Detention. The training, which was held in conjunction with the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida and the American Immigration Lawyers Association of South Florida, took place Nov. 9 at Greenberg Traurig’s Miami office.

Attorneys learned how to file a petition for a writ of habeas corpus to challenge the detention of immigrants who are being detained for more than six months. This is a growing problem nationally as thousands of immigrants, including many in South Florida, are confined in detention facilities for periods of one to two years or even longer. Many of these immigrants are never given an opportunity to appear at a bond hearing and plead their case for release.

Michael Tan, staff attorney at the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, was the featured speaker at the event. Tan litigates mandatory and indefinite detention cases throughout the country.

“We are proud to host this impactful event and hope that the members of South Florida’s legal community continues to step up and volunteer their time to provide quality legal service to those in need,” said Ian M. Ross, a Shareholder in the Miami Litigation practice and Co-Chair of the Young Professionals Group for Americans for Immigrant Justice Executive Committee.
