Chopped continues to be the most creative and interesting CLE being offered nationwide for lawyers and claims professionals

Magna Legal Services’ third annual “CHOPPED” mock trial competition took place at The Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on November 11th and 12th, and this year the total amount donated to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) was doubled to $10,000. Four top trial attorneys once again battled in a mock trial setting, presenting their best arguments to a panel of judges, and Ted Schaer of Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan, Schaer & Toddy PC once again defended his title, emerging as the winner.

Magna Legal Services will make donations to CHOP on behalf of the competing attorneys and their respective firms in the following amounts: Ted Schaer of Zarwin Baum DeVito Kaplan Schaer Toddy, P.C. ($4,000 donation), Robert L. Shannon, Jr. of Hall, Booth, Smith, P.C. (and a Major General in the Air National Guard) ($2,000 donation), Dana Fox of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP ($2,000 donation) and Jeffrey Diamond of J. Diamond and Associates, PLLC ($2,000 donation).

“Chopped continues to be the most creative and interesting CLE being offered nationwide for lawyers and claims professionals,” said Ted Schaer of Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan, Schaer & Toddy PC. “For the competitors, this experience may be even more stressful than a real jury trial since the fact patterns continue to grow in complexity and you are performing before the leaders of the claims and legal community. But no matter what happens, each competitor knows that the big winners are the children and staff at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia who are saving lives and making miracles happen on a daily basis.”

This year’s mock trial theme focused on a case of legal malpractice. The attorneys were judged in each round by a panel consisting of claims executives and in-house counsel from Fortune 500 companies, and the judges provided feedback on the effectiveness of the presentations. After each phase of the trial, they voted to "chop" a lawyer from the competition, leaving one ultimate champion.

"Now that an exciting third year of the “CHOPPED” competition has been completed, it’s time to focus on the ultimate goal of helping to make a difference for the children and families at CHOP,” said Peter Hecht, Magna's Executive Vice President of Business Development. “The attorneys and judges always provide an entertainment factor through the competition which is unlike anything else in legal event world, but in the end we all know this is being done in the name of raising money for the deserving kids at CHOP."
