October’s reported increase in tech job postings marks a jump from the 6.1 percent decrease reported in September 2015. The employment website’s increase in job postings is also inline with the growth reported by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, November 6, 2015. According to the Economic Situation Report, the IT industry gained 17,900 jobs for the month of October across several industries, compared to a loss of 800 jobs the month prior.
The data processing, hosting and related services industry reported a 0.067 percent loss last month or 200 jobs. The subsector now sits at 299,300 jobs. Over the last 12 months the industry has increased by 5.38 percent, from 284,000 in October 2014. This industry data includes computer programmers, computer support specialists, computer systems analysts, application developers, and systems software developers.
The computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, which includes computer hardware engineers, computer software engineers (applications and systems software), electrical and electronic engineering technicians and equipment assemblers, and semiconductor processors, gained 1,200 jobs last month after a reported loss of 2,900 jobs the month prior. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has increased by 0.17 percent while unemployment has increased by 2 percent.
Computer systems design and related services, a part of the professional and business services sector gained 9,900 jobs in October. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has increased by 5.79 percent or 104,000 jobs.
Management and technical consulting services grew by 7,000 jobs, a 0.53 percent increase over the month prior, and a 4.43 percent increase over October 2014.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 271,000 jobs while the unemployment rate was unchanged at 5 percent. Over the last 12 months, employment growth has averaged 230,000 jobs per month. In October, job gains occurred in health care, retail trade, food services and drinking places, construction and professional and business services.
