New Event Series Promises to Fill June 2016 with Events throughout Greater Chicago, to Celebrate Innovation and Connect All Ages with Activities

“Traditional tech events reach a limited group of professionals and companies,” says president Melanie Adcock. “Our idea is to make a big-tent space for all kinds of activities and events."

An ambitious new grass roots effort has a city-wide goal to expand beyond typical technology industry-insiders to reach average citizens of all ages and communities. Tech Month Chicago will amplify events such as Tech Week and Social Media Week, by expanding the conversation to an entire month of activities reaching a broader citywide audience.

June 2016 will be Tech Month in Chicago, a celebration of all things “S.T.E.A.M.” (an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) throughout greater Chicago. The non-profit group behind Tech Month says it wants to change the way real people understand technology and use it in their lives and careers.

“Traditional tech events reach a limited group of professionals and companies,” says president Melanie Adcock. “Our idea is to make a big-tent space for all kinds of activities and events, but with a specific vision of making them inclusive and interesting to underserved populations such as seniors and lower-income families connecting industry, citizens, and creators. People today are using science and technology in their everyday lives without realizing they can be a part of the conversation or pursue technology as a career. Tech Month Chicago will enable Chicagoans to have a deeper involvement in all aspects of technology.”

Organizations and individuals spanning all Chicago neighborhoods are invited to organize events with an emphasis on inviting the public, and post events on http://www.techmonthchicago.com. Suggested events include coding for kids, educational forums and invention showcases, civic-tech demonstrations, activities for families, company tours, job training, meetups, and festive music & art celebrations. Tech Month Chicago will act as a promotional arm to help raise awareness and participation city-wide.

About Tech Month
Tech Month Chicago is a nonprofit entity using a grass roots approach to collect and promote a month-long series of special events showcasing the depth and diversity of technology, math, science, arts and inventors. The inaugural launch is June 2016. This series of gatherings, educational activities, parties, and other events seeks to engage new audiences for science and technology in the Chicago area. Different from tech business events, Tech Month Chicago is geared toward all city residents — including senior citizens, kids, parents, and underserved communities — to share how technology shapes our culture, and to encourage participation from those outside the industry.
