New Orleans rap pioneer Big Freedia was featured in the newly released “Formation” video by Beyoncé. Beyoncé also performed portions of the song in her guest appearance during the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, also featuring Coldplay and Bruno Mars.
Big Freedia’s guest spot can be heard around the 1:10 mark of the “Formation” video. This moment is a milestone in Big Freedia’s career, with the New Orleans legend saying, “When I got the call from the Queen Bey, I could barely contain myself. Beyoncé is such an inspiration and the video is a masterpiece.”
Although Big Freedia may be new to Beyoncé fans, the Fuse network reality TV star has been a major face of bounce hip-hop, which originated in New Orleans, for years. Active on the bounce scene since 1999, Big Freedia has widely been credited with popularizing this unique genre of music. Bounce music is characterized by loud, energetic beats and frequent chants or call-outs to involve the audience in the music.
Big Freedia’s local popularity eventually led to the development of her own reality TV show. Season five of Big Freedia’s record-breaking show on Fuse, Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce, will premiere in late 2016 and season 6 is already in production. Big Freedia’s first scheduled public appearance after the release of “Formation” is a public Q&A scheduled for Saturday, February 13th at the New Orleans Public Library.
