Megan Wilson, Executive Director of Reach Out and Read Colorado, announced that she will be stepping down from her position at the end of May 2016, eleven years after hired as its first Executive Director.

Wilson’s leadership has powered Reach Out and Read Colorado’s growth from 42 clinics reaching 40,000 children to over 290 clinics, statewide, reaching more than 100,000 children and their families. In her resignation letter, Wilson stated, “The work of Reach Out and Read Colorado is a deeply important part of my life and I am proud of the efforts of staff and board to grow and sustain the organization across Colorado. I am honored to work with the many doctors, primary care providers and nurses statewide to make literacy a standard part of pediatric well-child care, supporting parents and caregivers as their child’s first teacher and ensuring children grow up with a personal library and love of books. My decision to leave Reach Out and Read Colorado was difficult and came after much reflection”.

In her tenure as Executive Director, Wilson led the organization in adopting the vision that Reach Out and Read Colorado aspires to partner with healthcare providers across the state to provide program access to every at-risk child from six months through five years of age by 2020. She has worked diligently to support the staff and Board of Directors in operationalizing this vision to ensure measured success over the next several years.

Reach Out and Read Colorado’s Board of Directors has formed a search committee and will engage an outside firm to guide the transition process with Wilson’s full support. Effective June 1, longstanding Program Director Meredith Hintze, will assume the role of Interim Executive Director until a new Executive Director is named. Wilson is, “energized to pass the baton to a new leader who will continue to carry out the vision of providing program access to every at-risk child in Colorado.”

Acknowledging Wilson’s impact on Reach Out and Read Colorado, Board Chair Dori Kaplan states “I believe I speak for the entire Board in recognizing Megan and her staff’s remarkable work in transforming Reach Out and Read Colorado from a great idea into a core component of caring for children, 6 months to five years. And, in partnering with our state government to advance the role of Reach Out and Read Colorado in its commitment to prepare our youngest residents for school and a greater opportunity for success in our schools.”

Reach Out and Read Colorado is poised for continued success. Led by a strong, engaged and strategic board Reach Out and Read Colorado will sustain a leadership position in pediatric healthcare and early literacy. An experienced, committed staff ensures that the program will continue to be delivered with fidelity to the research based model at more than 290 clinics, in partnership with more than 1500 medical providers statewide.
