Junior Alvarado teams up with Call 811

Junior is a young, talented jockey and we are happy to partner with him this year in an attempt to win a 3rd straight Derby for Call 811!

After a winning partnership with jockey Victor Espinoza in 2014 and 2015 which resulted in two Derby victories, Call 811 is proud to announce that jockey Junior Alvarado has teamed up to promote the lifesaving message, Call 811, at the running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands on May 7, 2016. Junior is excited to join the Call 811 team and to do his part to help promote the 811 safe digging message to the millions watching, and over 100,000 in attendance during the fastest two minutes in sports. “Junior is a young, talented jockey and we are happy to partner with him this year in an attempt to win a 3rd straight Derby for Call 811!” said Ryan White, General Manager of USA North 811 – the 811 notification center serving Northern California and Nevada.

Everyone who calls 811 prior to digging is connected to a local 811 notification center that will take the caller’s information and transmit it to the local utility companies in the area of the dig. Professional utility locating technicians will then visit the dig site to mark the approximate location of underground utility lines with spray paint or flags. Once a site has been accurately marked, it is safe to begin digging around the marked areas. Digging without knowing the approximate location of underground utilities increases the likelihood of a utility damage, which can cause serious injuries, service disruptions and extensive repair costs. According to national data provided by the Common Ground Alliance, nearly half of American homeowners who plan to dig this year will not call 811 beforehand, putting themselves and their communities in serious danger.

Junior will promote the Call 811 message by wearing “Call 811” on his jockey pants, as well as an 811 decal on his jockey boots during the running of the $2 million Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands on May 7, 2016. Call 811 is seeking its 3rd consecutive Derby sponsorship victory in 2016. Call 811 will also be teaming up with Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith during the running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks on May 6, 2016.
