Experts from the American Institutes for Research (AIR) will offer presentations on a variety of workplace and training issues at the annual conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) April 14-16, 2016, in Anaheim, California.

Experts from the American Institutes for Research (AIR) will offer presentations on a variety of workplace and training issues at the annual conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) April 14-16, 2016, in Anaheim, California.

The 31st annual SIOP conference, which will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center, offers experts opportunities to network, trade ideas, forge partnerships and keep up with the latest research and practices in industrial and organizational (I-O) psychology.

Panel Discussion: Clients 102: The Learning Continues
1:30 p.m.-3 p.m., Room 201A

This session will continue discussion among seasoned I-O professionals, who will share personal experiences, ideas and knowledge regarding common client relations issues encountered in the workplace that may not be addressed in graduate school. Topics include time management, effective language, ethical boundaries, challenging client decisions, scope creep and mitigation strategies.

Panel Discussion: Advancing the State of the Art in Job Analysis Research and Practice
1:30 p.m.-3 p.m., Room 206A

This panel will discuss issues that affect the accuracy of job analyses with a focus on the unique challenges present today. Drawing on experience in both research and practice, the panel will discuss methodological concerns, improving client and subject matter expert (SME) interactions, and determining when job analysis information needs to be updated.

Panel Discussion: From Grad Student to Professional: Things I Wish I Knew
1:30 p.m.-3 p.m., Room 207A

A diverse panel of seven early-career I-O professionals will share fresh and unique strategies, insights and advice on preparing for an academic or applied I-O career. In a discussion led by the experts, the audience will reflect on challenges faced during the transition from graduate student to professional.

Panel Discussion: MythBusters: Debunking Common Early-Career Mythconceptions
8 a.m.- 8:50 a.m., Room 303A

One’s first year out of graduate school is a whirlwind of new challenges and opportunities. New practitioners and a professor from various organizations will foster an engaging discussion using real-time audience polling and by discussing how to prepare for, and be successful during, one’s first year post-graduation.

Symposium: Understanding and Overcoming Resistance to Teleworking
10:30 a.m.-11:20 a.m., Room 204C

Although the majority of organizations have teleworking policies, most employees telework very infrequently or not at all. Four papers investigate reasons for this disconnect and provide practical guidance for organizations wishing to increase telework.

Special Session: Practitioner Speed Mentoring
5 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Room Pacific B

At this speed-mentoring event, practitioners will have the opportunity to participate in two separate 25-minute roundtable discussions with one or two seasoned professionals on predetermined topics of interest (e.g., leadership, internal/external consultancy, human resource metrics). This event provides an opportunity for practitioners and students to seek guidance, knowledge and wisdom from mentors. Dr. Krokos will lead the discussions on survey design and qualitative measurement, which will include tips and tools for designing surveys and measuring the “intangibles” in people and organizations, how to connect to objective metrics, and best practices in analyzing and presenting qualitative data to different audiences. Dr. Dumani has organized this speed mentoring session and will facilitate the session at SIOP with committee members.

Symposium: The Power of Doing: Connecting Overqualification to Proactive Behaviors
10:30 a.m.-12 p.m., Room 201B

Research has demonstrated that overqualification is related to a number of detrimental outcomes. Yet overqualified employees may be able to deal with this situation proactively. This symposium will link research on overqualification to a variety of proactive behaviors, thus demonstrating the “power of doing” for overqualified employees.

Panel Discussion: Managing SME Mayhem: Insights and Lessons Learned From the Trenches
12 p.m.-1:30 p.m., Room 205A

SME input is critical to many I-O efforts, but these interactions don’t always go as planned. Some SMEs are dominant, passive-aggressive, submissive or have hidden agendas. In this session, experts describe real-world scenarios illustrating “bad” SME behaviors. After attendees vote on the best action/response, experts will reveal what actually happened.

Poster Session: Anger and Guilt: Impacts on Sensemaking and Ethical Decision Making
2 p.m.-2:50 p.m., Ballrooms A-E

This study investigates the impact of experiencing anger and guilt when involved in an ethical quandary. By taking a sensemaking approach, results showed that guilt was generally more beneficial than anger for making ethical decisions, but both emotions drew participants’ attention to particular aspects of the situation.
