We are happy that CCOF, one of the county's oldest organic certification agencies, is the first to approve our new Eco-Orchard paint, and hope that others soon follow suit so that more trees will be protected in the safest way possible.

Fruit growers have long seen a need to protect tree trunks from the scalding sun. During the heat of the day, trunks can expand, and then contract overnight in the cooler air, sometimes splitting the bark and damaging the tree. A solution to this is to paint the tree trunks white to reflect the sun. Sounds easy enough, but organic farmers, in particular, have had a hard time finding the right product to use that will safely comply with the stringent regulations placed on them, and at the same time be durable, long lasting and not wear down when it rains.
Eco-Orchard Paint is a newly formulated, all natural paint, developed in cooperation with CCOF and approved for its association’s use. Its maker, Massachusetts-based Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company, has a long history of producing eco-friendly products.
In the early 1970's, founder Charles Thibeau set out to replicate an ages-old formula for a durable paint made from milk and crushed limestone, to use as an authentic finish for the Colonial reproduction furniture he made. He developed a modern, easy to use version of milk paint, reminiscent of the homemade paint our forefathers mixed up on the back porch using simple, locally procured ingredients.
Over the past 40 plus years, his milk paint powder, simply mixed with water before use, has become a well loved formulation for scores of woodworkers, history buffs in search of an authentic period look for furniture and interiors, and for many simply interested in using a natural paint with no harmful petrochemicals added.
In recent years, a second formula for walls, SafePaint, was introduced, which adheres well to many surfaces that the original formula resists. Many people who are chemically sensitive or allergic to modern paints have been able to use SafePaint with positive results. All of their paints are 100% biodegradable, VOC, plastic and latex free, and were the first paints awarded the Biobased label from the USDA. The company hopes that their new Eco-Orchard Paint will provide an effective, ecologically safe solution for preventing sun scald not only on organic farms, but for anyone interested in protecting their trees in the safest way possible.
