"We’ve hit a tipping point where distributed energy resources of various types can be integrated via a cloud-based, open-platform architecture to deliver a customer-centric energy services offering,” TimberRock CEO Brent Hollenbeck

TimberRock Advanced Energy, an award-winning developer of microgrids, energy storage and electric vehicle infrastructure, has announced the launch of GENESIS™, the industry’s first open-platform energy services offering for small and mid-sized buildings. GENESIS standardizes the technologies and methodologies previously developed by TimberRock to support Fortune 500 companies and, for the first time, makes them available to smaller clients and high-volume building types which have been difficult to serve by traditional energy companies in the past.
GENESIS utilizes a first-of-its-kind, open-platform architecture that allows it to incorporate a wide array of best-in-class energy technologies – regardless of the wired or wireless communication protocols they utilize - to provide clients a comprehensive, fully-integrated energy services offering. GENESIS is delivered as-a-service requiring no capital investment. Typical clients save an average of 20% on their energy bills while benefitting from improved resiliency and sustainability.
“We’ve hit a tipping point where distributed energy resources of various types can be integrated via a cloud-based, open-platform architecture to deliver a customer-centric energy services offering,” said TimberRock CEO Brent Hollenbeck. “Though the integration of multiple technologies and protocols is inherently complex, we’ve cracked the code, creating an open-platform where the best technologies are integrated and a powerful but simple customer value proposition is achieved.”
GENESIS has an open-platform architecture which integrates:
GENeration – On site solar PV, off-site wind and retail gas and electricity supply
Efficiency – LED lighting with smart controls and EV charging infrastructure
Storage - Battery storage coupled with generators for microgrid resiliency
Internet of things (IoT) – Cloud monitoring and precision apps for control
Service – No money down, immediate savings and a performance warranty
The GENESIS open-platform architecture has two powerful advantages. Most importantly, it is customer-centric allowing the deployment of whatever technology works for a given client. Secondly, it allows best-in-class technology suppliers to participate in an open, comprehensive energy services platform while not having to conform to a communications standard or protocol that may be suboptimal for their specific technology.
For GENESIS clients, the incumbent electric utilities continue to deliver electricity while a cloud-enabled gateway called DE-MAP™ is installed at each client site. The DE-MAP gateway powers multiple wired and wireless networks through which distributed energy resources can achieve a cyber-secure, utility-grade connection to the cloud. Once at the cloud, data is translated, integrated and aggregated. This allows GENESIS-deployed technologies to deliver benefits to the host site while also enabling the delivery of grid services that improve the efficiency and reliability of the grid.
“We believe GENESIS is the most fully-operationalized energy service platform of its kind in the industry for small and mid-size buildings,” said TimberRock COO Fred Ugast. “We’ve invested years into building the technology integration, as-a-service financing and National network of channel and installation partners required to support the middle-market. The result is a scalable service offering for clients who have one building or one-hundred buildings.”
