R & R Trucking, Inc., Joplin, Mo., recently held a special ceremony at its corporate office in an effort to further expand its support for military service men and women. The event was sponsored by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DOD) agency.

As part of the ceremony, Phil Nelson, CEO of R & R Trucking, Inc., signed a Statement of Support (SOS) for Guard and Reserve members. The Statement of Support confirms R & R’s pledge to fully recognize, honor and enforce the Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Employment Rights Act (USERRA); ensure managers and supervisors will have the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve; to appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce promoting opportunities to hire Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans; and to recognize and support our country’s service members and their families in peace, in crises and in war.

“By meeting the SOS criteria, R&R Trucking, Inc., pledges to stand proudly with its Guard and Reserve employees who continue to answer their nation’s call to defend our way of life. Their personal sacrifices are essential to the strength of our nation,” said Rear Admiral (Ret.) Lee Metcalf, ESGR Missouri state chair.

The company has already begun an initiative to train military veterans so they can obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). “Signing the SOS was the next step in demonstrating our military friendly culture here at R & R”, said Lisa DesJardins, Veterans Hiring Coordinator, R & R Trucking, Inc.

Employees of R & R also participated in a Uniform Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) briefing conducted by Colonel (Ret.) Steven Vanderhoof. The briefing is designed to educate employers how to effectively manage employees that are members of the Guard and Reserve.

“It is important that we not only know our responsibilities under the law,” says Tonya Harris, HR Administrator for R & R, “but also understand the specific needs for our employees that may also be a Reservist or serving in the Guard.” READ MORE
