The need for personal and public integrity, empathy, and being other-centered is as true for the national psyche as it is for individuals.

In the heat of perhaps the most divisive election year in American history, the future of the United States remains a mystery. The conversation is dominated by talking heads and tweets endlessly analyzing the potential outcomes, but in the constant madness of the 24-hour news cycle, it’s easy to forget about the voices that truly shaped the nation: those belonging to the Founding Fathers.

H. John Lyke believes the time has come for Americans to remember the ideas and principles that created this country. In his new book, “Political Straight Talk: A Prescription for Healing Our Broken System of Government,” Lyke explores the ways the federal government has changed over time and offers simple, viable solutions for getting the United States back to being the country George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and others envisioned.

“In writing the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the Founding Fathers established a democratic republic with a solid political basis,” Lyke said. “As long as future representatives faithfully carried out the people’s will, the democracy and republic would function in a way congruent with our forebears’ wishes. What in the world happened?”

Lyke draws from his decades of experience as a psychologist to analyze the wellbeing of the country and suggest methods for improvement.

“The principles that guide us in living happy and productive lives are the same whether we’re talking about our personal lives or the political growth of our nation,” Lyke said. “The need for personal and public integrity, empathy, and being other-centered is as true for the national psyche as it is for individuals.”
