American Kidney Fund Activates Disaster Relief Program to Help West Virginia Kidney Patients Affected by Floods
(PRWEB) June 29, 2016 -- The American Kidney Fund (AKF), the nation’s leading provider of charitable assistance to people with kidney failure, has activated its Disaster Relief Program to help West Virginia dialysis patients, many of whom have been severely affected by recent devastating flooding.
AKF’s Disaster Relief Program is a rapid-response system that provides emergency assistance to dialysis patients when disaster strikes a community. These funds help patients replace medications, food and household items, and pay for essentials such as the cost of fuel or transportation to medical appointments.
“For dialysis patients in West Virginia, the tragic flooding is a serious threat to their ability to get their life-sustaining treatments. Our Disaster Relief Program is a lifeline for patients who have been displaced by the flooding,” said LaVarne A. Burton, president and chief executive officer of the American Kidney Fund. “Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the American Kidney Fund is ready to provide emergency assistance to any qualified dialysis patients who have been affected by these recent floods.”
The American Kidney Fund’s largest disaster relief effort occurred after Hurricane Katrina, when more than 5,100 Gulf Coast dialysis patients in 12 states received emergency assistance totaling over $260,000 from AKF, thanks to generous donations from individuals and corporations. More recently, AKF provided disaster relief support to dialysis patients affected by flooding in the Gulf Coast earlier this year, tornadoes across the Great Plains in 2013, and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
