Donor Network West, the federally-designated organ, eye and tissue recovery agency for northern California and Nevada, announced the opening of a new Clinical Center that will improve the recovery process of life-enhancing tissues.

The new Clinical Center, located in the Norris Technology Center in San Ramon, CA, houses three dedicated tissue recovery suites, a kidney perfusion facility and storage for organ and tissue recovery supplies. It also features rooms that will allow for the sterile processing of instruments and support more research activities. A serology laboratory is also planned for the near future.

Donor Network West has connected donors’ gifts to those in need since 1987. In 2010, the non-profit completed the acquisition of three regional tissue bank recovery programs and has since managed the process. The inauguration of this new 24,000 square foot facility is the culmination of two years of planning for a new infrastructure that could support the increased tissue recovery activity; it is estimated that half of the tissue recoveries will be performed at the new building.

“This Clinical Center enables us to have more oversight of the process and to plan for tissue recoveries in an efficient timeline. It will also improve the logistical challenges of transporting staff across the region so we can better serve our donor families and tissue processors in a more certain time frame,” says Cindy Siljestrom, Chief Executive Officer of Donor Network West.

Other building amenities highlighted by Ms. Siljestrom include a state of the art conference room, office space, and common areas that are immaculately clean, well lit and safe.

Donor Network West partners with 175 hospitals, more than 500 funeral homes and 44 coroners and medical examiners to connect donors to recipients in 40 counties. In 2015, 2,232 individuals became eye and tissue donors in the areas served by the non-profit. These donors have the potential to improve the lives of nearly 100,000 people.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and a tissue donor can heal more than 50 others. Anyone can register as a donor at DonorNetworkWest.org or at the DMV.
