The 2016 Tweed Webb Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D. (pictured below) at the annual Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference in Kansas City on July 9, 2016.

I am humbled and honored to receive the Tweed Webb Award. I will continue my passion researching and sharing our rich African American baseball history.

The 2016 Tweed Webb Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Charles E. Crutchfield III, M.D. at the annual Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference in Kansas City on July 9, 2016.

The Tweed Webb Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a Baseball Historian/Researcher, who has made a positive impact preserving Negro League History with dedication and commitment best exemplifying Tweed Webb’s passion, pride, and excellence. The Award is given annually at the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference. This conference is held annually by SABR each year. http://sabr.org/malloy

Crutchfield’s dedication and leadership involve volunteer work, community enrichment and establishing the Jimmie Crutchfield Scholarship for graduating high school seniors attending college. Charles E. Crutchfield III MD has spent years researching the Negro Leagues and tracking down information on his great uncle, Jimmie Crutchfield. A lifelong Minnesota Twins fan, Crutchfield was an avid baseball card collector growing up. He is reviving that great American pastime by starting Crutchfield Card Company and creating cards of Negro League and MLB greats. http://www.crutchfieldcardcompany.com Crutchfield Card Company produces limited-run series of high-quality, retro-style art cards from his oil paintings. Last summer individual cards were given away at a Twins game to 5000 fans. The cards have since sold out and have become a sought after collectible.

Mr. Tweed Webb played an important and influential role in black baseball history. He was widely respected and admired by his peers for his tireless and often thankless work preserving the legacy of the Negro Leagues and African-American baseball greats. His work impacted his life and the trajectory of his career as a researcher and chronicler of the American pastime.

Dr. Crutchfield is a married father of three children. He is an accomplished physician, inventor, entrepreneur, and author. Crutchfield serves as the team dermatologist for several professional sports teams, including the Minnesota Twins Baseball Club, the Minnesota Wild Hockey team, the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Timberwolves. He and his family have formed the Crutchfield Foundation to provide scholarships, including the Jimmie Crutchfield Scholarship for high school seniors entering college.
