As long as an investor does their due diligence and works within the regulations of Self-Directed IRAs, a loan can be an important way for someone to diversify their investments.

Investors who are looking for a different kind of investment outside of the traditional stock market and fund market have an option for using their Self-Directed IRA in private lending, according to Jim Hitt, CEO of American IRA.

Responding to a blog post at Private Money Lending Guide, Jim Hitt was eager to point out that the IRS allows for a range of different investment types in IRAs so long as an individual takes it upon themselves to make the investments. “That’s why they call them Self-Directed IRAs,” Jim Hitt said. “You’re literally the one in charge of your financial destiny.”

While the article did note that Self-Directing an account is a critical step for taking on hard money lending in one’s IRA, and that there can be pitfalls to investments of this type, Jim Hitt noted that as long as an investor does their due diligence and works within the regulations of Self-Directed IRAs, a loan can be an important way for someone to diversify their investments.

“So often you see investors going toward stocks, bonds, and funds,” said Jim Hitt. “And one of the things I like to tell people is that your investment options aren’t limited to these markets. In fact, when you direct your own IRA, you open up a whole new world of investment types, not only in private lending, but in real estate, precious metals, and private companies.”

In fact, the rules regulating what investors can use in their Self-Directed IRA often explain what investors can’t use as investments rather than setting a hard limit on what can be used as an investment. Still, when directing one’s own IRA, Jim Hitt notes, it’s important to do your homework.
