As part of its continuing efforts to advance additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3-D printing, SAE International announces that it is a founding member of the new NextManufacturing Center Consortium at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

The NextManufacturing Center Consortium was launched in 2016 by one of the world’s leading research centers for additive manufacturing, the NextManufacturing Center. Harnessing the power of collaboration, the consortium has set out to advance additive manufacturing technology to widespread adoption and certification. It brings together leaders in the academic, industry, government, and nonprofit sectors to reach this goal.

“SAE International is proud to be part of the NextManufacturing Center Consortium,” Michael Thompson, Director of the Aerospace Product Group for SAE International, said. “We are there to understand and participate in the evolution of additive manufacturing technologies, and to add greater value to our members and customers.”

A true, transformative technology of the 21st century, additive manufacturing is enabling manufacturers to better test multiple design scenarios and develop solutions that can be quickly evaluated in testing facilities.

“Partnering with SAE International is defining for the consortium,” said Jack Beuth, NextManufacturing Center Director. “They share our foundational goals of increasing additive manufacturing workforce development and education. Also, their expertise in aerospace, automotive, and other transportation systems uniquely helps us explore additive research across those industries.”

SAE International offers a diverse portfolio of programs, products and services that delve into additive manufacturing technologies, including technical papers, conferences, educational courses and books.

SAE International is a global association committed to being the ultimate knowledge source for the engineering profession. By uniting over 127,000 engineers and technical experts, we drive knowledge and expertise across a broad spectrum of industries. We act on two priorities: encouraging a lifetime of learning for mobility engineering professionals and setting the standards for industry engineering. We strive for a better world through the work of our philanthropic SAE Foundation, including programs like A World in Motion® and the Collegiate Design Series™.
