Safety Organizations Petition Cell Phone Manufacturers to Replace Airplane Mode with Airplane/Drive Mode

With 25% of auto crashes in the U.S. directly tied to cell phone use, the dangers of distracted driving are clear,

VRM Telematics, a company promoting solutions to reduce distracted driving, and We Save Lives, a non-profit consumer advocacy group, today launched Margay’s Petition: a national awareness initiative petitioning cellphone manufacturers to replace “Airplane Mode” with “Airplane/Drive Mode”.

“Margay was killed because a driver was talking on his cell phone instead of paying attention to the road. Had he placed his phone in Airplane Mode odds are that she would still be with me today. This common sense name change will help prevent other parents from having to live my nightmare,” said Margay’s mother, Ms. Elissa Schee.

“With 25% of auto crashes in the U.S. directly tied to cell phone use, the dangers of distracted driving are clear,” said Ms. Candace Lightner, National President and Founder, of We Save Lives and Founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). “Not everyone flies but everyone drives and it is past time for this common sense name change. We are proud to partner with VRM Telematics to introduce this initiative that will increase awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.”

“For years, air travelers have switched their cell phones to Airplane Mode when flying, and the term has become synonymous with flying safety,” added Stephen Stewart, Managing Partner, VRM Telematics. “We believe a similar approach can be very effective in reducing the number of auto deaths and injuries directly tied to cell phone-related distracted driving, especially with younger drivers. Our teenagers become familiar with cell phones long before they reach driving age, and this simple change will go a long way toward preventing them from becoming future distracted drivers.”

About Margay’s Petition

Margay’s Petition, sponsored by VRM Telematics and We Save Lives, is an initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, and a request to cell phone manufacturers to replace “Airplane Mode” with “Airplane/Drive Mode”. This campaign honor’s the memory Margay Schee, a 13-year-old honors student tragically killed when a semi-truck traveling 60 miles-per-hour slammed into the back of her stopped school bus. The truck’s driver was distracted by his cell phone at the time of the crash.
