Why Are Veterans Forgotten When It Comes to Employee Motivation?

Business leaders simply aren’t aware of veterans’ intensive, high-quality training or their unique self-developing experiences with teamwork and ‘soft skill’ building.

Why is it so hard for companies to keep veteran employees engaged? Incentive Solutions President Mark Herbert tackles this question in an article recently published by HR.com, Why Are Veterans Forgotten When It Comes To Employee Motivation? The article responds to recent studies revealing that veteran underemployment—the inability to sustain well-paying work utilizing their skill set— plagues the national workforce, even though veterans employment rates are improving.

In his article, Herbert explains that employers’ ignorance of the average veteran’s work background is the likely cause of veteran underemployment. “It’s unlikely that today’s employers are passing up veteran job candidates out of prejudice,” he says. “The more probable explanation is that business leaders simply aren’t aware of veterans’ intensive, high-quality training or their unique self-developing experiences with teamwork and ‘soft skill’ building.”

Herbert encourages employers to research three of the most valuable skills and experiences that veterans bring to the workplace:

1. Intensive, highly specialized training
2. Familiarity with the latest, most advanced technology
3. Practical teamwork and strategic thinking

The issue of veteran underemployment and employee engagement is one that should extend past the concern of veterans and veteran activists. It impacts all U.S. citizens, Herbert says. “All U.S. taxpayers contribute to the development and training of our military. By learning more about veterans’ military training and experience, we can better understand how to motivate and retain our workforce’s most valuable, yet overlooked group.”
