ETA International has been invited to help gather vital information which focuses on coordinating the development of Position, Navigation and Timing standards and the need, in this discipline, for professional certification. ETA invites those with an interest in this technology to participate in a PNT survey to help establish these new standards.

The economic needs of the world are highly dependent on power grid systems, banking operations, transportation systems and communications systems. This immense critical infrastructure relies primarily on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) for Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) information. The easy access to GNSS signals has allowed manufacturers to incorporate PNT technology into virtually every device and vehicle on the planet.

What does PNT encompass? It involves critical infrastructure such as power grid, banking, transportation and communication networks as well as unmanned vehicles, autopilot, Network of Things (NoT) and online education.

PNT technology is experiencing unprecedented growth, thereby generating the need to develop and publish standards that define architectures, sensors, interfaces, training and certification. Standardizing PNT will provide engineers with the tools they need to develop systems that have not yet been imagined.

SAE International has gathered a working group of professionals with the mission of establishing a PNT committee to bring experts together and create standards that define architectures, sensors, interfaces, training and certification to maintain the uninterrupted operation of the world’s critical infrastructure. The PNT committee selected ETA International to create a survey in order to collect data that will help establish these new standards, along with other external organizations, due to ETA’s reputation as a respected industry trade association with professional working members in all areas of PNT.

ETA invites all those with an interest in this technology, or whose jobs involves or touches any of these areas, to respond to the PNT standards survey and add their ideas to this new work. The brief 10-question survey should take less than five minutes to complete and the information gathered can have a big impact.

PNT standards will ensure that the future is not stalled by the lack of effective methods to marry computers and networks with timing systems. These standards will accelerate the development of driverless vehicles, smart electrical grids, reliable communications systems, secure banking systems and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The rapid advancement of PNT technology will place great challenges on governments, managers, engineers, technicians and educators, while the intellectual property associated with it will only be found within a small group of subject matter experts scattered across the globe. PNT standards will provide governments, managers, engineers, technicians and educators with the tools they need to develop a robust and reliable critical infrastructure.

About ETA - Since 1978, ETA has issued over 150,000 professional certifications. Widely recognized and frequently used in worker job selection, hiring processes, pay increases, and advancements, ETA certifications are often required as companies bid on contracts. ETA’s certifications are personal and travel with the individual, regardless of employment or status change and measure competencies of persons, not products or vendors. All ETA certifications are accredited through the International Certification Accreditation Council (ICAC) and align with the ISO-17024 standard. http://www.eta-i.org

About SAE International - SAE International is the global leader in technical learning for the mobility industry supporting the personal and professional growth of over 4,000 technical professionals annually. SAE organizes and/or administers more than 25 international meetings and exhibitions each year covering all aspects of technology related to design, manufacture, and service life cycle for the automotive, aerospace, off-highway and other related mobility industries. SAE standards are internationally recognized for their role in helping ensure the safety, quality, and effectiveness of products and services across the mobility engineering industry. The more than 10,000 standards in the SAE database now include historical standards. http://www.sae.org
