China may be the world's largest and leading country adopting mobile payment, on-demand service (O2O), big data, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Snow (Xiaoxue) Qu was a Chinese student who came to the U.S. to study 9 years ago. She graduated at the top 2% at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with a finance degree and received many recognition and scholarships from the White House, California State Assembly, universities, and non-profit organizations. After she graduated from SFSU and went back to China, she opened a restaurant in Beijing called “云水人家”, which means “Yunnan Family”. The unique design of her restaurant and the mysterious ethnic minority food helped her restaurant receive many awards and be reported by many top Chinese news medias. She also has 10 years of experience in graphic design, video editing, computer programming, and internet marketing.
Snow (Xiaoxue) Qu told us that China may be the world's largest and fastest-growing market using mobile payments and on-demand services. She said that cash and credit cards are gradually becoming obsolete in China. Most Chinese people use mobile payments with QR code scanning technology, such as Alipay and WeChat Wallet, to pay for everything daily for restaurants, supermarkets, underground trains, movie theaters, utility bills, and even college tuition. More than 70% of the customers coming to her restaurant used mobile payment.
Chinese people are also benefiting from the overwhelmingly adopted QR code scanning technology used in the industry. Chinese people can use a smartphone to unlock shared bikes in the street provided by the bicycle sharing startup, Ofo, which is valued at $3 billion and has over 62.7 million monthly active users in China. Chinese people can also use a smartphone to scan the machines that can produce 100% pure squeezed orange juice instantly, or heat the food automatically. Car owners can use a smarphone to scan the autonomous car washing machine to clean the cars automatically. People are able to use a smartphone to scan and unlock the door and use the facility in an autonomous mini-gym, called Misspao. People can also transfer money to their friends between banks directly in seconds though Alipay QR code. Snow (Xiaoxue) Qu told us customers coming to her restaurant could even scan the QR code on the table to order food by themselves, and the smart device in the kitchen could automatically print the order and send to different kitchen areas to prepare different foods.
According to William R.S. Chen, who has been working in the American restaurant, retail, and healthcare industry for many years and received top reviews from customers, the U.S. actually has many advanced technologies and ideas even many years ago. However, the variety and widespread use of mobile payments and on-demand services are not as common at this time in the U.S..
On-demand service, called O2O (Online To Offline) in China, is extremely popular in China. customers can order and purchase restaurant food through a mobile app or website, such as Meituan or Baidu online food delivery service. A smart device can automatically print the order and send alerts to the kitchen. Once the food is prepared, “riders” from the Meituan or Baidu online food delivery network will come to the restaurants to pick up and delivery the food.
Many Chinese mobile apps allow customers to purchase and schedule services online and receive the services offline. Customers can have physical therapists, skin-care therapists, nurses, doctors, chefs, appliance maintenance workers, laundry pick up and delivery workers to come to their homes to provide the same day services. A recent example would be Yi23, a subscription-based clothing rental startup, that has raised $50 million from Alibaba, Softbank, and Sequoia. Based on a monthly rental subscription, Yi23 delivers fashionable clothes to customers and will pick them up for cleaning. However, on-demand services are not as widely offered in the U.S. due to the lower population density, lower demand, and higher labor cost.
Snow (Xiaoxue) Qu told us that she used an e-vendor, called “Meicai”, that provides service to thousands of restaurants in China, to order restaurant raw materials, sauces, and supplies at wholesale prices and to get her orders delivered on the next day. She also told us even when she was not in the restaurant, she was able to use a very smart mobile app with cloud computing technology and visualized interface, called 2Dfire, invested by Alibaba, to monitor everything happening in her restaurant in real time, such as revenues, costs, inventories, number of customers served, which foods ordered, which ingredients customers like or allergic to, or any mistakes created by employees.
She also mentioned about how artificial intelligence (AI) and big data were widely used in Chinese e-commerce industry. She said that online businesses were able to use AI and big data to analyze how many keywords and which keywords their competitors were using to improve the rankings of certain products and services, and get more traffic on Taobao (largest e-commerce website in China owned by Alibaba). By using other sophisticated online platforms, such as sycm.taobao.com, the online businesses can use AI and big data to help them deliver the advertisements automatically, accurately, and efficiently based on customers’ geolocation, gender, age, occupation, income level, hobby, preference of payment, and even local weather condition. According to Andrew Ng, the former chief scientist at Baidu and a professor at Stanford University, China may be the number one leading country for artificial intelligence (AI) because China has a huge market that can support a larger amount of data for AI to process.
Finally, when we asked her what kind of new technology or trend she thought people would adopt in the future, she mentioned about virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). In the movie, Hunger Games, people can create a unique augmented reality (AR) experience, such as creating computer generated animals, disasters, and traps in the real world that can interact with people.
She said that virtual reality (VR) and especially augmented reality (AR) would replace everything in the future. When she went to the school to learn IT, the staff working at the school asked her which course she wanted to take - web class, Android class, or iOS class. She suddenly realized that even a engineer who could perfectly write an app running on Android did not know how to write an app running on iOS. That is why Chinese mobile app companies always hire two types of people, iOS and Android engineers, because different systems require people to use different computer languages and “app development frameworks (a tech term)” to write the programs or apps. However, anything in the tech world can change and be replaced. Mobile phones with iOS and Android are gradually replacing PCs with Microsoft Windows, just like Microsoft Windows replaced DOS. In the future, if a new revolutionary system is invented to display digital information, such as displaying augmented reality (AR), top companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft will go bankrupt if they do not change along with the new trend.
In other words, the next generation of a revolutionary platform or system to display digital information will replace everything and dominate the world. All of the human beings will have no choice but to adopt the new system and adapt to the new tech world in the future.
