Elicina products are centered around the decades-old knowledge that snail mucin has the ability to help repair skin damage. More recent science confirmed this property, as snail mucin helps with production of collagen and elastin. The nutritious components of snail mucin include hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes, proteoglycans and antimicrobial and copper peptides. These peptides, proteins and vitamins all are anti-inflammatory.

The use of snail secretions in skin care likely began in Chile, where farmers realized that cuts and scratches to their hands was mitigated by handling garden snails meant for dinner plates in France. In the 1980s, French escargot wholesalers further spread snails and the idea that their cream had therapeutic benefits.

By 1995, Elicina used its knowledge of snail cream to produce its top-selling beauty products. South Korea, a massive cosmetic manufacturer and distributer, picked up on the snail cream trend. From there, Elicina and other snail mucin-based products expanded to more than 45 countries, moving from niche stores to big retail platforms online and in stores.

“Elicina has anti-aging effects ranging from helping remove wrinkles and blemishes, to repairing scar tissue and reducing acne,” Elicina General Manager Paula Bascunan said. “Of course, we offer different products for different skin types too – creams with added moisturizers for people with extra dry skin, hypoallergenic creams for people with sensitive skin. We have something for everyone.”

Elicina’s products are all derived from the Helix Aspersa Muller snail, of the species Cornu aspersum. Elicina products contain 80 percent snail mucin. These products include Eco Elciina XT Eye Countour Cream, Eco Elicina Nourishing Cream, Eco Elicina Plus Moisturizing Cream, Eco Elicina Pocket Moisturizing Cream and Eco Elicina Pocket Nourishing Cream, all recently repackaged to suit U.S. guidelines.

No snails are harmed in the mucin-harvesting process Elicina uses.
