It has always been about the work product, not the fancy reception area or self-congratulatory plaques on the wall. – Mike Shepard

Shepard Law, one of New England’s leading law firms for mesothelioma, asbestos, and toxic product injury litigation, celebrated their 20th anniversary this month. From its humble beginnings in a run-down office with orange shag carpet, the firm has continued to grow and now has offices in Boston’s Financial District and Worcester, Massachusetts. The firm continues to focus on helping clients with litigation in the areas of mesothelioma and asbestos exposure, hazardous products, tobacco, dangerous drugs, and defective medical devices.
For Shepard Law founder Michael Shepard, the firm’s early years included many memories, including “finding” office space by setting up folding tables and chairs in an abandoned floor of a downtown office building, eventually telling the landlord that he was using the space and offering $500 in monthly rent—which the landlord happily accepted. Shepard’s first million-dollar settlement was signed on one of those folding tables. The firm’s office real estate situation improved steadily from there, all the way to their current state-of-the-art office on Federal Street and second office in Worcester. These humble beginnings played a part in creating the foundation of the law firm today.
“When I started out on my own, I was lucky enough to not know how much I didn’t know about running a law firm. I just expected that if I worked hard and kept at it, it would all work out. Having clients who shared the same attitude definitely helped. It has always been about the work product, not the fancy reception area or self-congratulatory plaques on the wall.” – Mike Shepard
The firm is well-known for their experience in representing victims of mesothelioma and other asbestos exposure diseases in New England and across the United States, and has helped numerous clients successfully settle their cases, even when the process takes years, as it frequently does for asbestos cases. This reputation is due to the careful addition of talented attorneys to the firm over the years. As the firm’s staffing grew, special care was taken to ensure that the firm’s culture of providing compassionate representation didn’t falter. Just as they have done from day one, Shepard Law attorneys still travel to meet clients in their homes, where they are most comfortable, because the focus should always be on the client’s needs. The firm understands the need to balance fierce advocacy with compassion on their clients’ behalf because they know that clients are relying on them at some of the worst times of their lives.
“It is our job to take away the stress and confusion that a lawsuit brings, so that our clients can focus on the things that matter most—their health and their family.” – Mike Shepard
The firm’s growth and client dedication has been noticed—Shepard’s demonstrated commitment to victims of asbestos exposure resulted in his recent appointment as Plaintiffs’ Liaison Counsel in the Massachusetts Asbestos Litigation Docket. And even as it maintains its current focus, the firm continues to look forward; future plans for the firm include opening an office in Western Massachusetts where Shepard’s family roots are.
Reflecting on all that the firm has accomplished over the past 20 years, Shepard acknowledges that there’s still more to be done. And with continued leadership and a talented team of attorneys, the firm is ready for the next phase of its future.
