Florida Approves Workers’ Compensation Benefits for First Responders
CLEARWATER, Fla. (PRWEB) June 12, 2018 -- Florida’s first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be eligible for lost wages under Florida’s new workers’ compensation law. The bill – known as S.B. 376 – was unanimously approved by both the Florida Senate and the House of Representatives, and signed by Florida Governor Rick Scott on March 27, 2018.
“Florida’s new workers’ compensation law provides both medical and paid leave for first responders who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),” said Casey Carlson, well-known Tampa Bay workers’ compensation attorney with Carlson, Meissner, Meissner, Hart & Hayslett P.A. “Prior to the introduction of this new legislation, Florida first responders were only eligible to receive medical coverage if they had been diagnosed with PTSD. With this new workers’ compensation bill recently signed by Governor Scott, those first responders suffering from PTSD may also recover lost wages if they meet certain criteria.”
Florida Bill S.B 376 specifies that first responders suffering from PTSD who meet one of eleven conditions may be eligible to receive workers’ compensation benefits. The conditions include witnessing a homicide, treating an injured person, or seeing a deceased child. The bill will become effective on October 1, 2018.
