Relationship provides "best in class" material maps to Mudbox artists for sculpting and detailing digital models.

We are pleased to develop this strategic relationship with Skymatter

Skymatter Ltd. and 3D scanning bureau XYZ RGB, Inc. today announced a partnership to package XYZ RGB high quality, high-resolution material maps with Skymatter's Mudbox, the advanced, high resolution 3D sculpting software. The agreement provides Mudbox artists with high quality maps derived from scan data for sculpting and detailing their models.

"Mudbox artists have high standards, and we are excited to be working with XYZ RGB to provide maps of this caliber to the Mudbox community free of charge," said Andrew Camenisch, co-founder of Skymatter. "XYZ RGB has leveraged its widely respected scanning service to generate maps from real world scans, providing a quality of data that blows away high-resolution texture maps that are photographically derived."

Select XYZ RGB maps will be available for free for current and new Mudbox customers beginning in March. For non-Mudbox artists, these maps can cost up to US$69 each.

"We are pleased to develop this strategic relationship with Skymatter," said Troy Robinson, Chief Operating Officer of XYZ RGB. "The rapid adoption of Mudbox by leading artists and companies points to the power of its tool set, and XYZ RGB is delighted to extend these capabilities through the provision of our high-quality material maps."

Material maps are used to create detail in Mudbox by displacing a model's surface according to the light and dark values of the map. Conventional maps derived from photographs seldom provide accurate information since the values in the image are obscured by a number of factors, including the object's color and specularity, and the lighting conditions when photographed. In contrast, XYZ RGB uses the world's most accurate laser scanner to take minuscule measurements from the surface -- approximately 100 points for every millimeter square -- to generate "best in class" material maps that accurately represent the topography of the chosen surfaces.
