Students Will Discover People Who Have Changed History with Three 'History and the Headlines' Collections from ABC-CLIO
Spring 2008 Collections of Free Online Resources Focus on "The Other Boleyn Girl" and Two Historical Anniversaries
Santa Barbara, Calif. (PRWEB) February 26, 2008 -- This spring, students can discover how people's lives can change the course of history -- both as individuals and as part of a larger movement -- with three new free "History and the Headlines" collections from ABC-CLIO. "History and the Headlines" is a free online resource from ABC-CLIO Schools and leading history organizations, such as National History Day. Each site is designed to provide authoritative and engaging information to help students dissect and understand important events. The spring 2008 "History and the Headlines" topics include "The Other Boleyn Girl," the 40th anniversary of the assassination on Martin Luther King, Jr., and the 40th anniversary of the Prague Spring reform movement in Czechoslovakia.

Available March 7, "History and the Headlines: Women's Power and Roles in Tudor England" is a special "Reel to Real" edition, providing innovative instructional resources that serve as a jumping-off point for teachers to lead students into a guided inquiry of the events, conditions and people covered in a film. Developed to help teachers make the most of the buzz surrounding the newly released movie "The Other Boleyn Girl," ABC-CLIO's collection of free online resources explores the lives of the women of King Henry's court and the impact they had on the dynastic politics of Tudor England. Through reference materials, video clips, timelines and other resources, students will come to know noblewomen such as Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and the roles and fates of Henry's other wives.
On March 21, ABC-CLIO is launching "History and the Headlines: Forty Years Later: Recognizing Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Life and Death," honoring the legacy of this pivotal civil rights leader who helped to change our country. This collection of history resources includes excerpts from King's speeches, an in-depth biography of his life, photographs and a timeline of the civil rights movement in the United States. Students and teachers can use this stellar collection of history resources to put King's monumental life into context and understand how this champion of civil rights changed this nation and the world.
With "History and the Headlines: Socialism with a Human Face: The Prague Spring Reform Movement," students can investigate the popular protest movement that swept Czechoslovakia during the height of the Cold War. In 1968, the Czech people took to the streets demanding political reforms to replace the repressive Stalinist state that had been forced upon them by the Soviet Union after World War II. Fueling Soviet Union Premier Leonid Brezhnev's fear of a possible counterrevolution erupting throughout Eastern Europe, their actions prompted the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. With resources from ABC-CLIO's "The Encyclopedia of the Cold War: A Social, Political and Military History," students can examine the social and political consequences of this significant Cold War resistance movement in the Soviet bloc. Developed in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of this movement, "History and the Headlines: Socialism with a Human Face: The Prague Spring Reform Movement" launches April 18.
Other "History and the Headlines" topics planned for 2008 include "History and the Headlines: The Olympics," a collection of resources to help students put the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics in historical context.
