A 2008 Pennsylvania law, ACT 129, requires the state's electric utilities with more than 100,000 customers to reduce MWh consumption by 3 percent and reduce system demand 4.5 percent during peak hours by May 31, 2013.
ECS offers the demand response programs of PJM and also maintains a direct contract with several Pennsylvania utilities that bring its customers additional revenues and benefits. Several thousand facilities participate in ECS' PowerPay! Program, yielding more than 2,300 MW of demand reductions during grid crisis, equivalent to the output of several large power plants. Clients enrolled in an ECS demand response program will receive advanced notification of issues with the electric grid and will have the ability to gain thousands of dollars in revenue for reducing their electric use during the rare cases of grid instability. Participants are typically asked to decrease their electricity usage only when the electric grid is strained and in need of help to avoid brownouts or blackouts.
As an added benefit, through its Green Roots Initiative, ECS will donate trees to one of America's national forests for each customer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that enrolls in the program.
