Arlington, VA (PRWEB) December 13, 2012
The Professional Services Council (PSC) and JAMIS Software Corporation are partnering together this holiday season to collect food for the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) during PSC’s annual membership meeting on December 13. In its 20th year, AFAC is a community-based non-profit providing supplemental groceries to Arlington neighbors in need.
AFAC, which serves an average of 1,600 families who are in need each week, receives 65 percent of the food it distributes from direct donations. The high cost of living in this region often means that many families find it difficult to make ends meet. AFAC helps to feed approximately 3,500 adults and 1,500 children by providing essential nutrition such as eggs, milk, fresh produce, bread and oatmeal each week. AFAC reports that approximately 14,900 residents of Arlington County are considered to be food insecure.
Direct donations are one of the keys to AFAC’s ongoing ability to address the hunger problem in the Arlington area. Especially during this time of year, AFAC sees an acute need for donations because the number of families seeking assistance typically grows between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. PSC chose to focus on its charitable giving on AFAC because PSC’s employees will be holding their annual day of service at AFAC’s warehouse, where they will help to sort groceries, which will be distributed to families in need.
For a second consecutive year, PSC is encouraging its members to either donate at least one food item or make a financial donation during its Annual Membership Meeting. To encourage members to be even more generous, donors will be eligible for a chance to win a Kindle Fire HD tablet, furnished by JAMIS Software. In addition to donating food items, meeting attendees will also be able to make financial donations via cash, check or credit card this year.
"AFAC is a vital resource for Arlington families throughout the year and we are happy to support their mission to help our neighbors in need," said PSC President and CEO Stan Soloway.
“JAMIS appreciates the work AFAC does, not just during the holiday season, but all year long as well,” said Jeff Noolas, President and CEO of JAMIS Software. “All of us at JAMIS want to raise awareness and do what we can to help our community to fight hunger.”
AFAC is located at 2708 South Nelson Street in Arlington, VA. For more information about how to organize a food drive or donate, please visit http://www.afac.org.
