Argonne hosts 1st Int'l Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications Sept. 15-17

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory will host the 1st International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications Sept. 15-17, 2008.

Argonne, Ill. (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 27, 2008 -- The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory will host the 1st International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications Sept. 15-17, 2008.

Lithium batteries are the most promising energy storage device for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). Their use in HEVs and PHEVs would effectively reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in vehicles. However, there are key technological challenges that hinder the wide-spread commercial use of lithium batteries.

The 1st International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications will bring together in one place an international corps of federal research agencies from the United States, China, Japan, Europe and Korea and leading auto and battery makers, scientists and engineers that are actively involved in the development of safe, economical and long-lasting lithium batteries.

The mission of the conference is to enhance the global research and development effort to develop lithium batteries for transportation; to accelerate the discussion of research and development problems, progress and achievement; and to strengthen global collaboration.

Argonne was designated by DOE as the nation's lead laboratory for the simulation, validation and evaluation of PHEV and advanced technologies required for these vehicles. Argonne plays a major role in DOE's energy storage program within its Office of Vehicle Technologies. The research laboratory's R&D focus in the battery arena is on advanced lithium battery technologies that will meet the energy storage needs of the light-duty vehicles market.

Conference information is available by visiting the conference page.

Journalists interested in attending the conference can register for free here.

Journalists who are not U.S. citizens and would like to attend the meeting must complete a Foreign National Access Request Form and return it no later than close of business Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 to Angela Hardin (e-mail: ahardin @ anl.gov or fax: (630) 252-4175). The Foreign National Access Request Form is available by clicking here.

The 1st International Conference on Advanced Lithium Batteries for Automotive Applications is organized by Dr. Khalil Amine of the Battery Department at Argonne and Tien Duong of DOE. This meeting is sponsored by Keystone level sponsors A123 Systems, EnerDel™, ExxonMobil Chemical and Quallion; Platinum level sponsor Nissan; Gold level sponsor Envia Systems; and Silver level sponsors the Alfred Mann Foundation, Air Products and M3m Medical Research Organization.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory brings the world's brightest scientists and engineers together to find exciting and creative new solutions to pressing national problems in science and technology. The nation's first national laboratory, Argonne conducts leading-edge basic and applied scientific research in virtually every scientific discipline. Argonne researchers work closely with researchers from hundreds of companies, universities, and federal, state and municipal agencies to help them solve their specific problems, advance America's scientific leadership and prepare the nation for a better future. With employees from more than 60 nations, Argonne is managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.
