Internationally Renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon, Giancarlo Puddu, MD, Inducted into Sports Medicine Hall of Fame
Giancarlo Puddu, MD, is one of five 2009 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Hall of Fame inductees.
Keystone, CO (Vocus/PRWEB ) June 27, 2009 -- Giancarlo Puddu, MD, is one of five 2009 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Hall of Fame inductees. Chosen for his vast research and instruction on knee surgery, Dr. Puddu will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Friday, July 11th at the AOSSM Annual Meeting in Keystone, Colorado.
Born in Rome, Italy, Dr. Puddu attended the University of Rome, "La Sapienza" for his medical degree and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the hospital "Il Policlinico" in Rome. He did a fellowship in knee surgery with Professor Albert Trillat in Lyon and a fellowship in knee surgery and sports medicine with Dr. Jack C. Hughston in Columbus, Georgia.
His teaching career started at the University of Rome where he held an associate professorship. Since 1987, he has held several teaching appointments at the University of Siena, the University of Chieti, and at the Istituto Superiore di Educazione Fisica in Rome. He also served as team physician for the Roma soccer team. In 1987, he went into full private practice. He is currently an editorial board member of more than six journals, including the American Journal of Sports Medicine. In addition to teaching and practicing, Dr. Puddu in 1999, as president of ESSKA ( European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy served as Godfather for the AOSSM - ESSKA Traveling Fellowship, an annual scientific and cultural exchange among orthopaedic sports medicine physicians in North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Pacific Rim.
Publishing more than 150 papers and book chapters, Dr. Puddu's extensive involvement in knee surgery (ACL reconstruction and knee osteotomy), and sports medicine research on classification and tendon pathology has earned him international respect in the orthopaedic sports medicine community.
Dr. Puddu and his wife live in Rome. They have two daughters and two grandchildren.
AOSSM established the Hall of Fame in 2001 to honor members of the orthopaedic sports medicine community who have contributed significantly to the specialty. Nominations are submitted by AOSSM members and reviewed by and selected by the Hall of Fame subcommittee.
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is a world leader in sports medicine education, research, communication and fellowship, and includes national and international orthopaedic sports medicine leaders.
