As it is the primary shell in a pole building, and typically the only protection from the elements, the quality of metal used as siding and roofing panels is vital not only to the appearance but also the longevity of a pole building. Two primary components make up the McElroy Max-Rib II panels, the substrate and its protective coating. Max-Rib II incorporates a Galvalume substrate, which performs well above the more commonly known Galvanized. Where a Galvanized panel is coated only in zinc, a Galvalume panel had an added protective barrier coating of aluminum. It is this additional process that allows Galvalume panels to be warranted against perforation due to rust; standard Galvanized panels do not carry this perforation warranty.

Consumer expectation and demand for pole buildings has widened greatly in the last two decades. "When we began offering our 'fully built' and 'build it yourself' pole building kits, our primary customers were farmers in need of equipment storage.
