Individual winners were:
John Kotter - Lifetime Achievement in Workplace Learning and Performance Award. This ASTD award recognizes an individual for a body of work that has had significant impact on the field of workplace learning and performance. Kotter was recognized for his extensive and impressive work on leadership and change, topics he has been shaping for 25 years. Kotter says he has never cared about the "hot topics of the day. I prefer the big ideas that can be important and inspirational for a hundred years." Kotter has authored or co-authored 17 books that have been translated into 50 different languages and sold close to three million copies. In 2001 BusinessWeek rated him the top leadership guru in America. Kotter is Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Leadership Emeritus at Harvard Business School and is a graduate of MIT and Harvard.
John Seely Brown - Champion of Workplace Learning and Performance Award. This ASTD award recognizes individuals whose advocacy, commitment, or actions in support of workplace learning and performance has influenced groups of individuals, organizations, or society. Throughout his career, Brown has sought and championed innovation and a future-oriented way of looking at learning. He wrote Storytelling is Transforming 21st Century Organizations and Management in 2004 and recently Harvard Business Review lauded Brown's thoughts about video "gamer disposition" as one of the "Breakthrough Ideas of 2008."
Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner - Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance Award. This award is presented in recognition of an exceptional contribution of sustained impact to the field of workplace learning and performance. Kouzes and Posner wrote The Leadership Challenge, a book whose bedrock findings are as relevant today as they were in 1987 when first published. Based on groundbreaking research that uncovered universal practices of effective leaders, The Leadership Challenge is now in its fourth edition, has sold more than 1.6 million copies, and been translated into 19 different languages. A fifth edition, planned for 2012 will expand the global perspective of the current edition.
Dr. Rachel Ciporen - Dissertation Award. The award recognizes an outstanding dissertation that holds major implications for practitioners of workplace learning and performance. Dr. Ciporen's dissertation, titled "The Role of Personally Transformative Learning in Leadership Development: A Case Study Examining the Transfer of Learning from an Executive Education Program," explored two subjects: whether personally transformative learning, defined as the psychological aspect of transformative learning, enhanced leaders' ability to generate positive individual and organizational outcomes, and understanding leaders' experience of supports and barriers to transfer of learning from executive development programs.
In addition to individual awards, 40 organizations from five countries were also recognized with Excellence in Practice Awards or Citations. The Excellence in Practice Awards program recognizes organizations for results achieved through learning and performance practices and solutions. From 132 submissions, 17 awards and 49 citations were given in nine categories: career development, learning technologies, managing change, organizational learning, performance improvement, training management, valuing differences, technical training, and workplace learning and development.
Fifteen organizations and their partners received the Excellence in Practice Awards for demonstrating proven practices that have delivered measurable results in achieving organizational goals. Thirty-four organizations and their partners received Excellence in Practice Citations for demonstrating practices that have shown they will demonstrate measurable results.
