Dr. Mahfooz Kanwar, author of various publications on religion, crime and social problems, has released his latest book titled “Addiction to Religion” (published by Xlibris). In this timely volume, Kanwar discusses the recently growing trend of fundamentalism particularly in the area of religion.

“Addiction to Religion” is a thought-provoking commentary on the role of religion in society and a cautionary tale of the dangers that can happen when this institution is misconstrued or abused.

“Fundamentalism leading to addiction to religion is one of the most significant topics which are discussed on international television networks and in newspapers in the world at large,” Kanwar said. “My book is expected to be one of the most reliable sources to understand in depth what is happening in the world in terms of national and international terrorism.”

Kanwar clarifies that his book is not anti-religion; he himself is a devoted Muslim. Rather, his work is meant to inform readers that secular education and rational behavior can coexist with the institution of religion and that it is possible for this coexistence to deepen one’s religious convictions.

“I was once a fundamentalist Muslim without understanding the depth of my religion,” Kawar said. “My training in secular social sciences helped me to understand both religion and rationality.”
