What do Sean Connery, Bruce Willis, Charles Barkley and Homer Simpson have in common? They’re bald! What they lack on the top of their heads (in the way of hair) they make up for in charisma, charm and attitude. Whether by nature or by nurture, bald is sexy. As a satirical homage to baldness, artists Joey Skaggs and Lenora Paglia have launched “Advantages to Being Bald,” a line of collectible products celebrating the many ways being bald is a blessing. These products are now available for sale at http://www.zazzle.com/gobald*.
Chrome-domed and insecure about a receding hair line? Feeling like Samson after his encounter with Delilah? Or, to the contrary, enjoying the boldness of being bald? More than half of all men over the age of 50 are balding, and many more of all ages have chosen the look.
Says Joey Skaggs, “The amount of money men spend trying to stop hair loss on miracle hair growing products, hair plugs, wigs, weaves, and accessories, plus plumbers to clear clogged drains, could bail out Greece, Spain, Portugal and Ireland with money left over to pay down the U.S. debt."
“The prospect of going bald is usually not a pleasant scenario for the afflicted," Skaggs continues. "Everyone knows somebody who is dealing with this. We’re offering the coif-challenged a few offbeat laughs and encouragement to cope instead of comb-over. Go for it. Shave that head!”
In solidarity with the Bald Pride movement, Skaggs and Paglia are offering hundreds of colorful new products. including mugs, plates, T-shirts, aprons, hats, pillows, and a poster which celebrates all sixty advantages. Prices range from $1.55 for postcards to $21.95 for aprons to $28.95 for sweatshirts to $59.95 for throw pillows. Check out the store for details.
With whimsical notions like "You don’t weigh as much", "You’re easier to spot in a crowd" and "You look artsy", and a-wink-and-a-nod items like "You have more kissable surface" and "You look the same in the morning", the roster of “Advantages to Being Bald” ranges from the tasteful to the tasteless and sometimes risqué.
Each item is a numbered, collectible part of the series. Lenora Paglia’s style is delightfully detailed with pathos and charm. Each cartoon is irresistibly funny. Paglia is a paintings conservator by profession and an illustrator at heart. Her drawings and designs have been reproduced in a variety of publications and have won numerous awards.
Skaggs is an artist, satirist, and social activist. Other popular products he has created include Fish Condos (aquariums for upwardly mobile guppies, as seen in Life Magazine, the Neiman-Marcus Christmas catalogue and on Good Morning America), and the Universal Bullshit Detector Watch (hailed as the greatest invention since sliced bread). He also publishes the Art of the Prank blog.
