Affinity Health Plan Ranks Atop NY Managed Care Ratings

New York Department of Health unveils managed care consumer guides.

Bronx, NY (Vocus/PRWEB ) April 5, 2007 -- Affinity Health Plan received top rankings in the latest New York State Department of Health managed care survey and consumer guides. The consumer guides, which annually rate plans according to quality of care and consumer satisfaction, place Affinity at the top of the Medicaid and Child Health Plus (CHP) categories within New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

"Though we are pleased with these survey results, we continuously strive to provide our members with extraordinary customer service," says Barbara Kelman, executive vice president and COO. "Our mission is to improve the health of underserved populations by providing comprehensive high-quality coverage."

The guides help consumers analyze overall quality among the various types of insurances (Medicaid, Child Health Plus and Commercial Managed Care), with results grouped by region within New York (New York City, Long Island, Hudson Valley, Western, Central, and Northeast). The ratings include quality of care data from the 2005 Quality Assurance Reporting Requirements (QARR), and satisfaction data from the 2006 Consumer Assessment of Health Plans Survey (CAHPS).

Affinity scored particularly high in the consumer's guide to Medicaid Managed Care, finishing either first or second in overall ratings for plans in Hudson Valley, Long Island and New York City. Further, Affinity was the only plan to receive three stars in the Woman's Preventative Care category in the Hudson Valley and Long Island regions, and was one of only two plans in the New York City region to receive three stars in this same category. Affinity also received three stars in Maternal Care and Cardiovascular Care category in all three of its regions.

Similarly, Affinity ranked at the top of the consumer's guide to Child Health Plus. In addition to tying for fourth out of 17 plans in terms of overall ratings in the New York City region, Affinity was one of just two plans to receive three stars in the Infant and Toddler Care category in the Hudson Valley, Long Island and New York City regions. Affinity also received three stars in the Preschool and Middle Childhood Care category in all three of its regions.

Ratings for each category were broken down into three sections (Preventive and Well-Care for Children, Quality of Care Provided to Members with Illnesses, and Patient Satisfaction with Access and Service), with each section further segmented into specialties, such as Infant and Toddler Care, Asthma Care, and Getting Care Needed. Each specialty area then received a rating from one to three stars, with one star signifying "below average" and three stars meaning "above average."

Further information about the regional guides is available at www.health.state.ny.us.

About Affinity

Affinity Health Plan is an independent, not-for-profit corporation designed specifically to serve the needs of low-income residents in the New York metro area. Its programs are sponsored by New York State and include Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus, Medicaid managed care, and UniCare.

Founded in 1986 as The Bronx Health Plan, Affinity was the first health plan licensed in New York State specifically to serve government-sponsored populations, and, to a large extent, served as the development model for the State's Medicaid managed care program. Affinity also served as a pilot for State premium support programs for the uninsured.

Affinity has always regarded itself as a change agent committed to improving the health of local communities. Affinity's mission is to improve the health of underserved populations by providing comprehensive, high-quality health care coverage, and by striving, in collaboration with its primary care providers, to improve care-seeking and care-giving.

In October 2006, Affinity announced that it has been notified by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that it has been approved to operate two Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plans in the five boroughs of New York City. Enrollment of members for its two programs called Affinity Medicare Ultimate and Affinity Medicare Solutions began in January 2007.
