With summer just around the corner, more people will be traveling for business and pleasure. Many dream of traveling internationally, but summer can be an expensive time to do so. AlphaFlightGuru.com has tips for consumers and businesses looking to cut the costs of summer airfare.
Now is the time to buy, said Tim Gibson, CEO of Alpha Flight Guru.
“The best-priced airline fares are on sale today,” Gibson said. “Between rising oil prices, and increased travel demand during the summer, airfare rates will only climb as time goes on.”
“If you want to plan a business class flight from Boston to Hamburg sometime this summer, then you’re going to want to schedule it for sometime in August when the rates are low. If you book it in September, the rates jump back up again,” Gibson said.
The U.S. Travel Association estimated that 448 million people traveled for business in 2010.
When booking a flight, Gibson recommended being flexible with travel dates to ensure the best airfare.
“The trip from Boston to Hamburg is the same price in June and August,” Gibson said. “But it spikes in July.”
He had similar advice for those shopping for flights to China:
“If you’re traveling business class from Los Angeles to Beijing, book in August because that is when the airfare drops significantly.”
Many people who dream of globetrotting across the planet become discouraged by the high costs of international travel, Gibson said.
“If traveling for leisure, I recommend looking on travel websites like Kayak.com for packages,” he said. “You can book a nine-day vacation from Los Angeles to Australia with hotel and airfare for less than $2,500.”
And Gibson said three- and four-night cruises to the Caribbean may be booked for less than $500 per person.
Another way to save on travel expenses is by using frequent flier miles for airfare and hotels, he explained.
“Signing up for a credit card like an American Express or Chase Ink Bold card, can help you earn frequent flier miles at a much faster rate,” Gibson said.
According to the U.S. Travel Association, about 90 million Americans used the Internet to plan travel within the past year.
“The best deals on airfare these days are ones that come up in short-term sales that the airlines keep running,” said Ed Perkins, a contributing editor to Smarter Travel. “For some of these the purchase window is only a day or two.”
It’s important to sign up to receive notifications when the airlines have deals, he explained.
“You’re either going to spend a couple hours a day online looking for airfare, or sign up for one or two of these travel bulletins that organizations put out,” Perkins said. “Southwest has a program that you can put on your computer that actually dings you when they have a deal for you.”
