Prosthodontists are masters of complete oral rehabilitation. A prosthodontist is dedicated to the highest standards of care in the restoration and replacement of teeth.
Woodland Hills, CA (PRWEB) April 07, 2014
As part of National Prosthodontics Awareness Week (April 6-12), Dr. Saj Jivraj and Dr. Mamaly Reshad of the Anacapa Dental Art Institute in Woodland Hills and Oxnard, Calif., are explaining to the public what the specialty does.
Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad are two of the only 2 percent of dentists in the world who can call themselves prosthodontists.
“A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the esthetic restoration and replacement of teeth; receives two or three years of additional training after dental school; and restores optimum appearance and function to your smile,” Dr. Reshad said.
Both Dr. Jivraj and Dr. Reshad completed three years of Advanced Prosthodontic training at the University of Southern California.
These “smile makers” perform advanced and complicated procedures that go beyond the means and expertise of general dentists. They have the training and 20 years’ experience to diagnose and treat underlying problems as part of an overall dental treatment program
The American College of Prosthodontists, says “Prosthodontics is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Graduate programs in prosthodontics include classroom lectures and seminars, laboratory and clinical training in cosmetic dental treatment, crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays, complete and removable partial dentures, dental implants, TMD-jaw joint problems, traumatic injuries to the mouth’s structures, congenital or birth anomalies to teeth, snoring, sleep disorders, and oral cancer reconstruction and continuing care.
“Prosthodontists are masters of complete oral rehabilitation. A prosthodontist is dedicated to the highest standards of care in the restoration and replacement of teeth.”
National Prosthodontics Awareness Week raises awareness of prosthodontists and their place as quarterback of a patient’s dental health team.
“This week-long celebration will inform the public about proper oral health including oral cancer detection; will provide consumers with details on how to best care for missing teeth; and will educate the public about the benefits of seeing a prosthodontist,” Dr. Jivraj said. “With some 178 million people in the U.S. missing at least one tooth, increased awareness about proper oral health is critical.”
Tooth loss happens from decay and gum disease, can result because of an injury, cancer or simply wear in the mouth. A prosthodontist provides care for missing teeth including dental implants and dentures, and treatment of congenital anomalies.
A prosthodontist often works with a team of dental professionals to create a comprehensive treatment plan for patients. Prosthodontists are dedicated to the highest standards of care in the restoration and replacement of teeth including bridges, crowns/caps, teeth whitening methods and veneers.
A recent survey by the American College of Prosthodontists, of which Jivraj is a member, indicated that prosthodontists donate on average $25,000 in pro bono care each year. The treatment delivered by prosthodontists included a broad scope of services including restorations for patients with complex needs.
The American College of Prosthodontists is the professional association of dentists with advanced specialty training who restores and replaces teeth to create optimal oral health, both in function and appearance including dental implants, dentures, veneers, crowns and teeth whitening.
