Expanded Range of Proven Remediation Treatment Materials Can be Delivered to Contaminated Sediments with AquaBlok Composite Particle System

Toledo, OH (PRWEB) August 20, 2008 -- AquaBlok, Ltd., a manufacturer of innovative composite particle materials, and recognized as providers of a low-permeability thin cap sequestering technology, has introduced an expanded range of products that deliver proven treatment materials to contaminated sediment in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

The ability to cost effectively deliver known treatment materials to contaminated sediments establishes an important potential alternative to the industry's historic "default" solution of dredging, hauling and disposing of contaminants in a landfill.

By providing the ability to deliver known treatment to the sediment, it is possible to achieve some level of reduction of contaminants in place - known as in-situ treatment, to help reduce long-term environmental risk.

AquaBlok is currently able to provide a composite particle with the following range of Treatment Materials:

  • Activated Carbon
  • Zero Valent Iron
  • Sulphur
  • Zeolites
  • EHC-MTM
  • Organoclays
  • Shredded Tire
  • Aluminum Sulfate

To date, a major challenge in using these known-effective treatment materials in an aquatic, sediment environment has been the ability to place the predominantly granular/powder material in a low cost, high volume, uniform manner. The AquaBlok composite particle system does this and also provides the following primary benefits:

  • Place Quickly - Just Like Aggregate or Sand, Through a Standing Water Column
  • Greater Effectiveness Due to Higher Particle Surface Area
  • Range of Permeability - Match to Native Sediment, No Hydrological Impact
  • Place Below Sand or Alternative Capping Material - For Isolation Layer
  • Function as Treatment Gate with Low Permeability Cap - Funnel & Gate
  • Efficient Use of High Value Treatment Material - Thin coating on a substrate/core
Amended AquaBlok materials, known as AquaBlok+, will address a wide range of common contaminant issues as well as a range of very typical remediation site characteristics.

Below is a partial listing of both types of sites and contaminants, as well as typical uses where the material can be applied.

Types of Sites/Contaminants:         Uses:
Manufactured Gas Plants (MGP)          Sediment Capping
Wood Treatment Facilities (Creosote)       Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB)
Mercury Contamination / Metals         Cut-off Walls / Soil Mixing
Chlorinated VOC             Ponds / Wetlands / Filtration
Ammonia / Phosphorus            Berms / Spill Control Applications
