ArrestRecords.us.org is updating their criminal record background checks in order to separate local, state and criminal charges, the company announced yesterday.
“When people are trying to evaluate the information in our reports, they need a way to get a sense of how serious the different charges are,” an ArrestRecords.us.org spokesman said. “By breaking down the charges in the order of the type of agency that filed them, we will give consumers that extra tool. It should make it much easier for people to make decisions based on our reports.”
The type of agency that files a criminal charge can provide context for how major the crime is that is being alleged, he said.
“Local charges are generally for fairly minor things,” he said. “For example, an assault charge on the local level can result from a minor bar fight between friends. A state or federal assault charge, on the other hand, indicates that there was serious criminal intent and major injuries resulting from the assault. That can be a big difference when someone is trying to figure out if a person is a serious criminal or not.”
Federal charges are the most serious charges of all, he said, because they nearly always lead to prison time.
“There is no parole in the federal system, and judges are forced to use mandatory sentencing laws,” he said. “This means that someone facing federal charges is at a much greater risk of becoming a convict.”
