PJ Brosmith, a resident at Deer Path of Huntley, is the winner of the 2016 Best of Our Abilities Contest.

The contest, which is organized by the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition, recognizes individuals with disabilities who go out of their way to make their communities a better place to live.

Deer Path of Huntley is located at 12500 Regency Parkway in Huntley, Illinois, and serves adults with physical disabilities between the ages of 22 and 64.

Sarah Skradski, the administrator at Deer Path, shared this about Brosmith in her nomination letter:

"PJ is a brilliant man with an impressive work resume. He enjoys research, especially trivia, which he shares with our community. PJ has researched why brain fitness activities are important for adults and hosts community-wide trivia challenges twice a month.

He is an outstanding resident who is always positive and encourages other residents and our staff at Deer Path. An active member of our community, PJ co-leads our Alcoholics Anonymous group and is part of the Deer Path News Team, our acting group and resident newsletter staff.

PJ takes the time to get to know people’s stories by listening and engaging with them. He is always smiling and has encouraging words for everyone at the Deer Path community."

Deer Path opened in 2013 and combines residential apartment-home living with the availability of personal assistance, help with medications, and a variety of convenience and support services, such as meals, housekeeping and laundry.

Residents live in private apartments that they furnish and decorate to their tastes. Each of the apartments features a kitchenette, spacious bathroom with shower and grab bars, individually controlled heating and air conditioning, and emergency alert system.

Certified nursing assistants, working under the direction of a licensed nurse, are on-duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"We provide a community for adults that gives them an alternative to living in a nursing home with a much older population or struggling alone at home," Williams said. "Our community meets the unique needs and interests of residents, and they've made our community their home."

Residents also benefit from opportunities to socialize with neighbors and participate in activities and special programs.

The community has an activity room, beauty salon/barber shop, computer lab, convenience store, therapy room, a service dog training area and basketball court.

Deer Path is certified to operate through the Illinois Supportive Living program, which emphasizes personal choice, dignity, privacy and individuality.

The community is managed by Gardant Management Solutions, of Bradley, Illinois.

Gardant Management Solutions is the largest provider of assisted living in Illinois, managing more than 40 assisted living communities that together house more than 4,000 apartments.

"Our focus," says Rod Burkett, President and CEO of Gardant, "is to provide Deer Path residents with the love, compassion and dignity they deserve and the help and assistance they need. Our emphasis is on helping each resident achieve and maintain as much independence as possible for as long as possible."

Communities managed by Gardant include the Heritage Woods affordable assisted living communities in Batavia, Bolingbrook, Chicago, Gurnee, Manteno, McHenry, Plainfield, Rockford and Yorkville, Illinois. Gardant will also manage the GateWay at River City community for adults 22 to 64 with physical disabilities, which is slated to open in Peoria next month.
