Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame Announces 2008 Honorees
A Michigan-based nonprofit that honors athletes with disabilities who compete for excellence and inspire others to reconnect with life, mentor others and promote disability awareness
Rochester Hills, MI (PRWEB) October 3, 2008 -- The Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame today announced that two individuals will be inducted into its Sports Hall of Fame and three other exceptional athletes will be recognized in the categories of Lifetime Achievement, Rising Star and Athlete of the Year on November 13 as part of the 10th Annual Induction Ceremony, Awards Dinner & Auction in Troy, Michigan.

The Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame 2008 Inductees are John Asquini (Westland, MI) and Scott Davidson (Utica, MI). Induction is in recognition of their accomplishments in competitive sports as disabled athletes and their ongoing commitment to being positive role models within the community.
Scott Davidson suffered a spinal cord injury. He is an accomplished wheelchair racer and handcyclist with national and international experience. In 2007, Davison was named USA alternate for handcycling for the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008. He represented the USA handcycling team in the Tour De France. He has also participated in numerous U.S. and international marathons.
Davison was the founder and president of "These Colors Don't Run Foundation raising $500,000 for scholarships for family members of Desert Shield/Storm. (1992-1997). He is active with St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church. Davison is a motivational speaker at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, sharing his experiences with spinal cord patients. He also addresses alcohol and drug treatment centers to teach drug-free lifestyles.
John Asquini has cerebral palsy, which has left half of his body paralyzed. He is an accomplished cyclist who successfully outperforms cyclists without disabilities. Highlights include finishing second in the USCF National Championship, Michigan Victory Games champion for 12 years, and a participant in the National Victory Games two consecutive years. Asquini also finished seventh in the 1996 Paralympic Games in cycling. In addition to cycling, Asquini has and continues to compete in table tennis, bowling, track and field, and swimming.
Asquini was one of the founders of Programs to Educate All Cyclists (PEAC). He has also been recognized for his involvement with the Michigan Victory Games, the ARC cycling program, and Celebration of Cycling Ride.
Michael Mushett (Colorado Springs, CO) will be presented with the Rick Knas Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions to athletes with disabilities. His career includes over 20 years directing competitive sports and adaptive recreation programs at the local, national and international level. He is currently director of outreach and development for the U.S. Olympic Committee-Paralympic Division. Mushett has been recognized by Rotary International, International Olympic Committee, Nassau County and the Michigan Jaycees for his community involvement.
Tony Priest (Williamsburg, MI) will be presented the Mark "Doc" Andrews Rising Star Award, given to an athlete under the age of 25 who has competed as an athlete with a disability and served as a role model I the community. Tony is a 17-year old accomplished downhill adaptive skier with sacral agenesis and an honor roll student.
The Wheelin Team 457 (North Branch, MI), led by Ray Brown, will be presented the Athletes of Year Award. Team members compete in track and field, competitive air rifle, swimming, archery, table tennis, bowling, billiards, Powerlifting, deer and turkey hunting and fishing. Disabilities include spinal cord injury, amputee, muscular dystrophy, and TBI.
